Ben Grinberg is a Philadelphia-based creative working in live performance and video. Before attending the Pig Iron School as a member of the inaugural class, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Classical Studies. As co-founder of Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, which formed from collaborations with fellow classmates at Pig Iron, he has performed original works of genre-defying performance for tens of thousands across 11 states, Canada and Mexico. Almanac’s immersive, improvised acrobatics have been presented by FringeArts, Pig Iron, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Bill T. Jones, and many others. The company’s full length works include “Communitas,” “The Fleecing,” “Leaps of Faith and Other Mistakes,” and the upcoming “Exile 2588,” which will premiere in the 2016 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. He has been a resident artist at Colgate University, New York Live Arts (Fresh Tracks), Bearnstow, the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, and Mascher Space Co-op, where he also serves as finance coordinator and board treasurer. He is a founding member of Red 40 and the Last Groovement (a project also formed with fellow classmates) where his alter ego is Hot Moist Tooth on alto saxophone. As an actor he has been seen locally on stages from Theatre Horizon to Shakespeare in Clark Park. He is the lead physical theatre teacher and curriculum architect for Circadium, a 3-year professional circus training program based in Philadelphia launching in 2017. Since 2014 he has been a close video collaborator with the internationally renown dancer Eiko Otake, with whom he traveled to Santiago, Chile in January 2016.
