Summer Session: Journey of the Mask
Summer Session 2024
The Summer Session is an immersive training program for creative theatre artists interested in pushing the boundaries of contemporary performance. Rooted in Pig Iron's own artistic questions and performance techniques, the intensive workshop is intended to launch performers into the world of physically precise, emotionally rich, imaginatively constructed ensemble-devised theatre. The workshop centers on actor training and on the skill of the performer to heighten his/her/their presence onstage.
Week 1 focuses on the Neutral Mask. Week 2 focuses on the half-masks of the Commedia dell'Arte and Balinese mask traditions. Week 3 focuses on the red nose clown. The workshop from start to finish aims to spark imaginative transformations within each performer that bring vitality and play to the stage.
Led by Emmanuelle Delpech and Trey Lyford, the workshop is a research playground for performers interested in building a stronger physical vocabulary into their work and those seeking an approach toward performance that is rooted in Lecoq’s pedagogy.
Emmanuelle recently returned from serving as a Core Faculty at Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris. She co-created and performed in many Pig Iron productions, winning a Barrymore Award for her performance in The Lucia Joyce Cabaret. Emmanuelle was a founding core faculty member of the Pig Iron School. Trey is a teacher and a founding Co-Artistic Director of the highly acclaimed physical theatre company rainpan 43 performance group. In addition to his work with rainpan 43, Trey develops and produces works as an individual artist and is an Associate with the Obie-Award winning company The Civilians. He has created original pieces with Pig Iron and is currently on the graduate faculty for the UArts/Pig Iron Devised Performance Program.

2024 Application Details
- Applications due by March 31st
- All applicants will be notified by April 10th
- Spots are limited. Applications will be processed as received until all spots are filled. Applicants will know their status within two weeks of submitting their application.
Session Cost:
- Apply by March 31 and pay in full (pending acceptance) by May 1: $1500
- Applications paid in full (pending acceptance) after May 1: $1750
- A deposit of $350 is due within two weeks of receiving your acceptance
- Payments in full due by May 27th
Access to Practice Scholarships
Pig Iron recognizes the historic lack of representation for BIPOC artists in the theatre industry and particularly in the devised theatre field, and as theatre educators we acknowledge our responsibility to expand access to opportunities to train, learn, perform, and grow. To that end, we are offering 2 full scholarships for our upcoming 2024 Summer Session workshop specifically intended for BIPOC-identifying individuals. There are many different barriers to participation, cost being a significant one. We acknowledge this is one of many steps to take to help increase access and opportunity, and we are excited to launch this spring, knowing that a diverse cohort of students will enrich the learning environment for all.
Access to Practice Scholarships are part of Pig Iron’s commitment to help build a future theatre community that breaks down barriers to access and enables new leaders to emerge, particularly from historically underrepresented communities. Pig Iron is proud to support dedicated artists from the BIPOC community who will use the workshop as a chance to deepen their own artistic practice.
This initiative arose out of an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) process we began in 2022, and out of conversations with Pig Iron’s new EDI Working Group.
Details
This scholarship is intended to cover the entire tuition cost ($1750) of the Summer Session: Journey Of The Mask (June 10-29th) led by Emmanuelle Delpech and Trey Lyford. This scholarship will be awarded to two BIPOC-identifying individuals. Members of the Pig Iron EDI Working Group will review the materials and select the awardees.
Application and Selection Process
After completing a summer session application for the workshop, please email workshops@pigiron.org with a brief letter of interest to be considered for one of the Access to Practice scholarships. In your letter of interest, please address these 3 questions:
- What was your journey into theater? Where did you begin and where are you heading?
- Why are you applying for this scholarship?
- What do you hope to learn by studying with Pig Iron?
Scholarship applicants should submit a full application to the program, which will be reviewed by the workshop leaders. After their decision on which students will be admitted, Access to Practice letters of interest will be reviewed by a subcommittee of Pig Iron's EDI Working Group, who will select the awardees.
Work-Study Positions
Pig Iron is able to offer two facilities work-study positions for this workshop that come with a one-third tuition reduction. Duties involve preparing the studio and lounge spaces for use each day and require some availability in the hour before and after the listed workshop hours. If you are interested in applying for one of those two positions, please send a short paragraph to workshops@pigiron.org explaining how the work-study position and accompanying tuition reduction would benefit you. You must complete a workshop application and apply by email for the work-study position by March 31 to be considered. Decisions will be made by April 10.
